Invitations, Finally

Saturday, June 5th, 2004

Amazingly enough, we ordered invitations today. For some reason this makes it feel like the wedding is really on, as opposed to just pretend. There are so many other major things going on right now, like Tiffany having McKenzie and Kristi getting ready to go on maternity leave and my business sucking, that September 25th seems a long way away. In reality, it’s just under four months from now.

Getting the order done was a two-hour ordeal. I’ve been fretting over the invitations like they’re the end-all and be-all of the wedding itself. We decided on a tri-fold white invitation with raised tiny flowers. Very elegant(-ish).

The wording was giving me fits as well. The main issue was that the middle part of the tri-fold has space for a verse, and I spent a ton of time hunting for the “perfect” verse of Scripture. In the end, I went with what my gut had told me from the beginning: “We love because he loved us.” It makes perfect sense.

I am still convinced the wedding industry is bilking millions of Americans out of billions of dollars per year. The invitations were nearly $400 - for 100! Geez.

Shoes from Hell

Saturday, June 5th, 2004

I hate shoe shopping. I loathe and despise it. Perhaps it’s because I wear a size 9, and everything on display is a size 6. I’ll end up finding beautiful cute and wonderful shoes on display, and ask the salesperson to bring out a 9. When I try on my size, the shoes look like they were made for Bozo the Clown.

Really, it’s annoying.

As Kristi reminded me yesterday that fall shoes should be out shortly, I was panicked about shoes and decided I would not sleep tonight until I found some. To minimize my frustration, I left Stephen at home for this round of horror. Lord & Taylor and Famous Barr, usually two great places for shoes, were worthless. I never wear white shoes in real life, so why would I want to spend $50 on white shoes now?

Ready to kick someone’s dog, I left and headed out to DSW shoes. I’d only been there once or twice, but I remembered aisles and aisles of shoes that were cheaper than what I’d been seeing at the department stores.

The clearance racks were nearly worthless, until I found a pair of silvery-grey shoes that fit and looked pretty good. Co-dependently I called Kristi at home to see what her opinion was of grey shoes with a white dress. She wasn’t really keen on the whole idea. Once I quit panicking and thought about it, I saw that she was right.

As we chatted and I headed for the exit, though, I stumbled upon a great pair of white shoes. They were cute, with two wide straps coming over the foot and a white strap of leather on the heel. On the wide straps on the front there’s leather alternating with a mesh material. My size was there - and $30 on sale! Woo!

Shoe panic: over.
