Ode from a Napkin

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

My husband made my lunch today.

I thought that was so sweet. Of course, it probably stems from the late-afternoon phone calls he’s been getting lately, with me complaining that I’m hungry because I haven’t bothered eating lunch yet. But…l

When I talked to him today after lunch, he asked if I’d seen the note he’d left. I hadn’t! But then I pulled everything out of the bag, and found it, written on a napkin…

If you keep me close to you,
   I promise not to rip;
You can fold me right in two
   And dab me to your lip.

But if your cup should spill its tea,
   Forgive me if I miss,
I would rather avoid that sea
   So I can have your kiss.

In love with silliness,
