Rite of Passage
I believe that one of the rites of passage in parenthood is costume design. I remember springing my first "costume" need on my mother. I think I was in first grade, and we were doing a puppet show. I'd been assigned the role of the cow. The instructions were sketchy, but my mom did the best she could. I was impressed, actually, at the results. Although she's not known for her artistic abilities, she created a cow face out of brown construction paper and drew on the facial features with a black pen. I believe it even had pink in its ears. I was so impressed with this that I've kept it in a memory book all these years. I pulled a note out of Justin's backpack with a feeling of dread - they are doing a musical and needed a "costume." Oh boy. Luckily for me, they are initiating me gently - it's only a white t-shirt with a picture of his flag of ancestry on it. (I'm still dreading the day they make me re-learn how to thread the needle of my sewing machine!) Undaunted by the task, we all went shopping this weekend and bought the t-shirt and fabric paint. However, in my usual way, I procrastinated until tonight when it came to actually painting the shirt. Justin was cranky and didn't want to have anything to do with it. (Typical for an 8-year-old.) So during what should have been my dinner time, I painstakingly sketched out and colored in a German flag. (In most cases this wouldn't be a difficult task, but I'm not generally artistically inclined. Must take after my mother.) I'm happy to say there is a German flag (shirt) flying in my kitchen. Now I just pray that it's dry enough to wear tomorrow... Last minute again, michelle Posted by Michelle at March 23, 2004 10:56 PM | TrackBack
